Dear Residents, I was speaking with a builder and Realtor the other day and they were telling me how well the homes in Worthington Hills are holding their values and selling when listed. When I asked why they felt we were “bucking the trend” they attributed much of our success to a stable neighborhood with a strong civic association. When I mentioned that every year we struggle to get residents to pay their $45 dues they were incredulous! They couldn’t believe that anyone, let alone nearly 40% of the residents annually neglect to join and support their neighborhood association. When asked why I felt this was, I answered honestly that I believe we live in a world of “doers and takers”. The doers always do and the takers always take and only “do” when something shocks them out of their complacency. The question is which are you? Have you sent in your dues? Or are you a taker? Do you enjoy the beautiful flowers and manicured grass at the entrance yet contribute nothing towards it? Do you put your kids on bikes and floats in the parade but sit idly by the rest of the year? Does your family avoid the crowds and park their blanket on a fairway or porch to watch the fireworks but pay not one penny towards them? If you’re a doer, we thank you! Question is: is your neighbor? How many on your block are doers and how many are simply takers! Look at the curb! You may be shocked to see how many don’t have freshly painted street numbers! There’s no nice way to say it. Those are takers that are satisfied to sit back and let the rest of us support them and their community without a second thought! After watching Washington I think we’re all a little tired of being asked to carry the burden for the “takers” of the world! Residents that pay their dues prior to April 1st will receive their discount cards, free admission to Summerfest and, if numbers allow, a fresh painting of the street address on the curb. This year when we tally those that paid their dues we’re going to post the street addresses of these “doers” on the Worthington Hills website! Will your address be among those listed or are you one of the takers? Years of takers have drained the reserves of the Worthington Hills Civic Association. There’s no cushion left. While the board has made many cost cutting decisions we simply can’t cut anymore without severely affecting the traditions and values of our community. Without a membership of over 70% we simply cannot afford to offer fireworks and flowers. Will you let silence and weeds take the place of the traditions of Worthington Hills? We hope not! Become a doer and ask your neighbors to do the same! Please continue to read below for a few more items of news and remember these too are benefits of living in Worthington Hills! Leadership Worthington Service Day will be on Saturday, May 2 nd. If you need assistance with a project you may email us at: info@Worthingtonhills.org. If you’d like to assist a neighbor that maybe is struggling to handle certain projects please email us as well. The projects, given enough volunteers, are usually completed in a few hours on Saturday morning. Neighborhood Garage Sale – will also take place on May 2nd. As of this writing we have not heard from the Realtors that have sponsored this in the past but the board is committed to continuing this popular event. We will send out another email with details as soon as we have them. In the meantime, please put the date on your calendar and start cleaning out that basement! Scholarships – the board voted to continue offering to $500 scholarships to two deserving students in Worthington Hills. One of last years recipients noted how helpful it was to have that money to pay for their books last fall! To be eligible student’s families must be paid members of the Civic Association. Applications will be available on-line at our website: worthingtonhills.org. The application deadline is May 15th. And last but certainly not least the Board of Directors and Worthington Hills as a community would like to offer our heartfelt thanks to Officer John Thomas of the Perry Township Police Department. Officer Thomas has given up many evenings since 1993 to be the liaison to our association and has been a very important part of keeping Worthington Hills the safe community that it is. John will be ceding his duties as liaison to our board to 2nd shift officer Steve Cesaro. We welcome Steve and will miss John. He’s been a wonderful asset to our community and we hope he enjoys those Wednesday evenings with his family.! Thanks John! We’ll all miss you!
